Five Favorites: Vol. 2 - Favorite Re-reads Edition

Five Favorites, hosted at MoxieWife.com

One of my favorite pass-times of all is reading, so for my second try at participating in the Five Favorites link-up, I'm sharing my five favorite fiction books/book series to read over and over again.*

1.
This trilogy of books has become my hands-down favorite thing to read in my whole library.  The first time I tried reading it, years ago, I found it to be uninteresting and difficult to follow.  But then, a magical thing happened a little while back: I found the audiobooks of the series.  And the narrator -oh, the narrator!- absolutely brought Tolkien's world to life for me.  The Elvish words became things of beauty instead of oddities for my brain to skim over when I couldn't figure out the pronunciation.  The language, instead of sounding a little stilted and arcane, became courtly and noble.  And almost best of all, the narrator actually sung all of the many songs throughout the book!  Now, every time I read (or listen) to this trilogy, it's sheer delight.  If you haven't read The Lord of the Rings, I highly suggest you give it a try.  And I also really recommend listening to the audiobooks at least once (even if you don't like audiobooks for one reason or another, give this one a try!).

2.
Such a sweet classic, and another that I rediscovered as an adult and came to appreciate far more than I did as a youngun'.  I love the affection the sisters have for each other, and I can't help but laugh at all the silly messes they get themselves into (especially Jo!).  It's a good long book with some time-tested truths told in a simple, engaging manner that really appeals to the girl in me.

3.
What can I say?  I'm a Potter-fan, and if I ever have kids, I will totally read these books with them when they get to be old enough.  They're fun, the prose is easy to follow, and there are some good themes through the series, like friendship, good fighting evil, and self-sacrifice.  Plus, I really like long series of books, because when I find a story I like, I want to immerse myself in it for a good long while.  The audiobooks for this series (read by Jim Dale) are really excellent as well.

4.
Another great series.  Each of the actual books is short, so they're great for a quick read on a slow day.  I will admit that sometimes I find them a little heavy-handed, but I recognize and appreciate the author's good intention anyway.  Plus, Lewis really knew how to paint a picture of an amazing fantasyland that you can't wait to visit again someday.

5.
The Shadow of the Bear
I love fairy tales almost as much as I love fantasy.  The problem with fairy tales is that they're too short!  That's why these novels are great: Regina Doman takes familiar fairy tales, fleshes out the characters, gives them a modern twist in a contemporary setting, makes them more relatable, and still maintains the integrity of the original story.  Best of all, this is a modern series, which means there may be more books in the future!  Yay!!!!

I'd love to hear about your favorite re-reads.  Please, take a minute to leave a comment about your favorite fiction books, and then head over to Moxie Wife to check out the rest of the blogs in the link-up!

  4. This is awesome. And as a fellow bibliophile, I recognize the covers to Little Women and the "box set" of Narnia books. I've been re-reading LOTR over and over the past 2 months, and every time I see something new. That book is a goldmine.
